Key results of the study were:

  • Nurses believe that healthcare professionals and patients have a shared responsibility for participation to occur.
  • Nurses emphasized the importance of their initiatives to achieve patient involvement by initiating dialogue and providing an environment where the patient can ask questions.
  • Nurses expressed that some barriers to participation in safer care were seen in patients, healthcare professionals, and the healthcare system.
These key findings are relevant to clinical practice as healthcare facilities must find time and appropriate environments to encourage open dialogue between patients and their nurses/ healthcare professionals. If having an open discussion and creating a safe environment is not something the staff is not confident in, training can be offered to provide tips on how to give that part of care to the patients.
